During my June trip, my brother Phil took me on an easy hike up by Cheakamus River, near Whistler. (home of 2010 Olympics)
I love the rainforests of the westcoast.

Adventures in the country
|

Housesitting is going well.
It is taking me a bit of time to get used to driving so far out of town. I am getting good at driving a standard transmission. I still stall here and there, especially when I stop on a bit of a hill. The only time that really bothers me is when some impatient person comes up behind me and honks the horn.
The other day, I had a problem with steering wheel fluid cap coming loose and fluid coming out. It looks like someone put too much fluid into it. My friend (related to people whose house I'm watching) did a lookover and all is well with it now. I am glad he's good with cars....could build one from scratch.
Last night he looked at it and I had dinner there and enjoyed watching a colourful fire display outside. He put some copper piping filled with old garden hose into the fire, and the flames turned pink, green, blue, all kinds of colours.
My birds are moved over and I also brought my bike...so all is good. I prob won't even go into town this Sat, anyways..
My mom is staying at my place right now.

Only way to dispose of garbage

Here are some more photos of Bamfield.
It is such an isolated community, that the northern part is unaccessable by car..so the local residents have to pay a big fee to have the boat take their garbage out.
I love the flowers that people can grow on the West Coast. You can't grow them here where I live up north, away from the Ocean.

Here's some more photographs from my 2 week trip in June. I have a lot of photos to dig through...but I only can show you a few..
These are photos of Bamfield..which was the destination of the Lady Rose. Of course, we took a return trip on the boat, so we went back with it to Port Alberni. Another option is to take a water taxi from the isolated section that the boat landed in to the other side, where there is a road out and catch a ride from there.. Or you can even start hiking the popular West Coast Trail from here. That is a trail that I'd love to do sometime, and it takes a good 7 days to complete. You get to walk along the west coast of Vancouver Island.
Speaking of adventures, I'm in the middle of them..Summer tends to be like that for me. I just came back from a 4 day hiking trip to Well's Gray Park which is near Clearwater. It's quite a drive from here....
It was a very hot weekend, it got as high as 40 C (over 100 F) in Clearwater, and only was slightly cooler up top where we camped. Thank goodness, that there was this nice clean lake to swim in right by our campsite. (Actually, there were many clean little lakes up there, including one shaped like a heart!) I am glad it wasn't a glacier lake..though it was so hot, I probably would still have jumped into it if it was. With my water filter, I had plenty of drinking water available....
The best part of that hike were the flowers...and I'll show you them when I get to that batch of photos..I took over 200 photos!
And I am currently on yet another adventure. This time I'm housesitting in the country....45 mins out of town....so I am juggling between being at my apt and at the house in the country. No internet there. I get to drive back and forth with their little pickup truck..and they've paid for the gas.

A Black Bear

While on the Lady Rose I was fortunate enough to see some Killer Whales (Orcas) and a black bear. Here are shots I took of them. We have lots of black bears where I live.
As always, I will be posting here not every day. This week, I'm gone for a while to do some backcountry hiking while I have the chance. We are going to Well's Gray Provincial Park.
Then I got a month long farmsitting gig out of town, so I won't be on the net as much. Yeh, I get to drive back and forth and practice driving a standard.

The Lady Rose
|
|
After hiking in Manning Park, I caught the bus to Vancouver and then took the ferry over to Vancouver Island. On my way to vancouver, the bus was stopped at a 'Commercial Inspection Blitz'. We spent 40 mins on the bus while it was being examined, from top to bottom.
But I made good connections on my way to catch the ferry..
While visiting parents on the island, Dad took me on a trip on the Lady Rose which is a working ship that goes from Port Alberni to Bamfield and back. Here are some pics from it.

All about home
|
|
It's been a smokey week, with probably a few hundred fires burning around Northern BC. It's all clear now thanks to the recent storms, but here's a pic of the moon this week, it's so red.
And my Basel plants are doing well, I should be using them in my cooking. It was so hot in my apt, that I had all the windows wide open and could put the plants on the window sill. Thankfully, it's cooled off a lot. It's more bearable now. I got the pot hanger in Vancouver.
I thought I was growing some spearmint, but the seeds fell out into my drawer and 'got mixed up with the basel seeds'. I thought at least one of the seeds would be spearmint, but no such luck. I'll try again next year.

More Manning
|
|
Here are some more pics from the recent trip.
The first one is from Skylines II hike, and the others are from the 3rd hike we did, up to Frosty Mtn, which is over 2500 feet at least. I just made it up to the Larch Forest..maybe 1800 or so feet up.
The first lake you see, closest, is Lightening Lake.
I am not sure if the lake behind it is either Flash, or Thunder Lake, but it is one of those 2. There are 3 lakes right beside each other, but you can't see them all in this shot. I like the name themes of these lakes.
Lots of snow still.
